Is your Current Plan too low in Carbs to Maximize Fat Burning?

Today’s blog post is inspired by a t.v programme I watched called ‘Secret Eaters’. It showed people who thought they were eating well but really weren’t! It only talked about calories and showed the people they were eating too many calories but didn’t actually go in to detail about where the calories should come from. For the average person this could be very misleading. There is far more to fat loss than cutting calories, and almost always those who make the most severe cuts for a long period of time destroy muscle and their metabolism.

We then have people who have a little better understanding of nutrition and know what Protein, Fats and Carbs are. Sometimes as they say “a little bit of knowledge is dangerous”. Often these people do really well at the start of a low carbohydrate diet/food plan – they may lose up to 10lb weight in 14 days and think that this will be the approach they should keep using. BUT the simple fact of the matter is that many diets/food plans like this are below 1000 calories per day – far too low.

What I see happen in a lot of cases is that after the initial weight/fat loss that worked great but it’s not sustainable and these individuals often binge. They binge for a while and then put the weight back on and a few weeks later think to themselves – “I need to go to a no carb diet again because that worked for me. BUT did it actually work or was this long term no or very low carb diet the reason why you got fat in the first place?

These individuals who’s calorie intake is way too low are often still over fat even though they have been on and off no carb diets for ages? And does this fat loss seem to come right back within a month?  People in this situation are making the brain believe starvation is encouraging the body to efficiently preserve and expand fat storage – its the bodies defense mechanism to hold onto fat when it’s extremely stressed.

Now its not just a case of trucking a load of carbohydrates into the body just because I told you a no carb/extremely low carb diet was bad. You need to be sensible and plan and time your carbs correctly. We use a calorie/carb cycling approach which as you have probably seen from our , put simply it works!!.We utilise carbs strategically around times and with cheat meals.

There are many people who still don’t feel good with a lot of carbs or want to take in many carbs – and for those people there is an excellent alternative approach that works unbelievably well for fat loss. It’s one of the unhidden gems we learned from Phil Richards and one of the most powerful solutions for those on a low carbohydrate diet is amino loading around workouts and between meals that sends signals to the brain that a lot of food has just come into the body.  As a result metabolism increases, but there is nothing to burn except stored fat since the amino acid drink has little to no calories.

So for those of you who are at a plateau with your fat loss and have over dieted for a long period of time I recommend trying this approach. Combine this with a great weight routine and watch the fat fly off!
